TACLOBAN CITY —Two government officials in Eastern Visayas have cautioned the public to be vigilant against fraudulent schemes targeting contractors, suppliers, and private individuals.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Leyte 5th District Engineering Office (DEO), in a statement on Monday, Jan. 20, said several contractors and suppliers have received phone calls from individuals claiming to represent District Engineer Eusebio Culas.

These “impostors” solicited money and contributions allegedly for various charities or institutions.

Culas denied authorizing any solicitation activities in any form or for any purpose.

The DPWH called on the public to refrain from entertaining any solicitations and to report similar incidents to the DPWH Regional Office VIII or Leyte 5th DEO through their official Facebook page, “Region 8 – DPWH,” or email at [email protected].

Northern Samar Gov. Edwin Ongchuan also fell victim to online scams, the Provincial Information Office (PIO) announced on Monday.

“Fraudsters have been using his name, photograph, and contact details to deceive individuals into transferring money or sharing personal information,” it said.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary for Integrated Sciences Carlos Primo David during a forum organized by the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP) said the DENR rolled out a digital application process in three regions of the country.

Philex Mining president and CEO Eulalio Austin Jr. said they have an application to explore a nickel tenement adjacent to the firm’s site in Zambales.

Both Ongchuan and Culas emphasized the need for public awareness to thwart scammers who exploit their victims.

Both officials reiterated their commitment to protecting their constituents from fraudulent activities.
